Pebble Time Will Color Your E-Ink World & Amazon Wants to Bring Mobile 3D Printing to Your House

In this Five for Wednesday, we look at Pebble’s new watch and a smart lock that doesn’t break the bank.

  1. Pebble launched their newest Kickstarter campaign yesterday for their new smart watch, the Pebble Time. They’ve smashed their goal of $500,000 and still have 30 days for the campaign. Unlike the Android Wear and Apple Watch, this watch will use color e-ink (think Kindle, but with more color). I’m curious to see if they’ll have a backlit version. $199 when it comes out.
  2. In the market for a new smartphone but want to compare features? Head over to and see them all. This is a very comprehensive list and can be overwhelming if you’re not sure what you want, but it’s a very elegant interface. Thanks to Jeff Chalmers for the tip on this one.
  3. According to, Amazon has filed a patent for 3D printing trucks. Very interesting. One of the benefits to Amazon would be a reduction in storage space for products. This would mean you might get products in the time it takes now for a pizza to be delivered (we can dream). (h/t Slashdot)
  4. Being a local expert may have new meaning if apps like yapQ or Detour gets their way. These services provide ‘location-aware audio tours’. As a person walks a route, different audio will play depending on their location. So, here in Chicago, there might be a track loaded that will play when I’m in front of the Wrigley Building. Imagine the impact on our business if you or your broker were able to create these audio tours for a local community. What a great way to advertise your expertise.
  5. Smart locks are new, but a falling price is. Sesame, one of the new entrants in the market ranges in price from $80 to $130. Check it out today. You can allow predetermined people to have digital keys on their smart phone and know when they enter and for how long. Head over to The Verge to read more.
